Guide / Older pension rules

Over 80? Older rules may still matter.

Some older State Pension entitlements use rules that are very different from today’s new State Pension.

Age can determine which pension system applies.

People who reached State Pension age under the older system can be affected by rules that do not apply in the same way to younger pensioners. Some over-80 entitlements and older Category D rules can therefore be relevant in the right circumstances.

Why a broad review helps

An underpayment may not be about HRP at all. For an older customer, it can be sensible to look at the pension award, National Insurance record, marriage or bereavement history and the date State Pension age was reached.

What to have to hand

  • date of birth;
  • current State Pension amount;
  • any pension award or uprating letters;
  • marital/bereavement history where relevant;
  • National Insurance information if available.
This page deliberately avoids promising that being over 80 creates an entitlement. The exact older-State-Pension rules need to be applied to the individual facts.
